MADRID — Athletic Bilbao faced Mallorca in a match that ended in a scoreless draw on Monday, despite the fact that Bilbao played over an hour with an extra player on the field.
Mallorca’s Samú Costa, a midfielder from Portugal, received a red card in the 23rd minute after receiving a second yellow card, having been booked earlier in the match for a foul in the 10th minute.
Despite their numerical advantage, Bilbao struggled to break the deadlock, although they were dominant in possession. A goal by Nico Williams was disallowed following a VAR check just before halftime, and later in the match, his brother Iñaki’s goal was also ruled out for offside in the 75th minute.
In addition to these disallowed goals, Nico Williams came close with a curling effort that hit the crossbar, further emphasizing Bilbao’s frustrations in the quest for a goal.
As a result of this match, Athletic Bilbao remains unbeaten since August, climbing to fifth place in the league standings with a total of 18 points from 11 matches.
Mallorca, with an equal points tally, is positioned seventh overall, trailing Real Betis on goal difference.
