BROOKINGS, S.D. — In a thrilling overtime matchup on Saturday night, Amar Johnson propelled South Dakota State to a 20-17 victory over South Dakota with a decisive 3-yard run into the end zone.
The Coyotes made the first move in overtime, with Will Leyland successfully kicking a 40-yard field goal.
Ranked third in the FCS coaches poll, South Dakota State has now secured three consecutive victories over their fourth-ranked rivals, South Dakota.
After trailing 14-7, Travis Theis orchestrated an impressive eight-play, 50-yard drive, bringing the Coyotes to the Jackrabbits’ 10-yard line. However, the drive was abruptly halted when Graham Spalding intercepted a pass from Theis at a critical first-and-goal moment, leaving 4:23 on the clock.
In a remarkable turnaround, MiQuise Grace of South Dakota capitalized on the subsequent play by recovering a fumbled ball and sprinting 15 yards into the end zone, leveling the score at 14-14.
Following this, the Coyotes managed to force the Jackrabbits into a three-and-out. Their final attempt in regulation ended in disappointment when Leyland missed a 46-yard field-goal attempt with just 26 seconds remaining.
The game started with Theis scoring from the 1-yard line to give the Coyotes an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Jackrabbits responded with an 80-yard drive that culminated in Mark Gronowski rushing in for a 1-yard touchdown. Later in the first half, Amar Johnson added to the Jackrabbits’ score with another 1-yard touchdown run, giving them a 14-7 advantage just before halftime.
Gronowski finished the night completing 20 of 27 passes for a total of 163 yards for South Dakota State (6-2, 3-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference). Angel Johnson contributed significantly with 81 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Gronowski added 54 rushing yards himself. In contrast, Aidan Bouman of South Dakota completed 20 of 32 passes for 163 yards, and Theis carried the ball 15 times for 78 yards.
This gripping contest showcased the resilience of both teams and highlighted their competitive spirit as they continue their seasons in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
