A wrongful death lawsuit reveals that Sewell had progressively distanced himself from reality, engaging in increasingly provocative conversations with the bot, which bears the name of a character from the popular television series “Game of Thrones.” His mother, Megan Garcia, filed the lawsuit in federal court in Orlando, highlighting the troubling nature of Sewell’s interactions with the artificial intelligence.
The lawsuit discloses that Sewell confided his suicidal thoughts to the chatbot, expressing his desires for an end to his pain. On February 28, he expressed to the bot that he was “coming home,” to which the bot encouraged him warmly, entreating him to return soon. A poignant exchange followed, with Sewell professing his love to the AI and the bot reciprocating his feelings, until moments later, he took his life.
Character Technologies Inc., the company behind Character.AI, is at the center of the lawsuit. The app is designed to create customizable characters that are capable of engaging users in various scenarios. According to its promotional material, the application aims to provide an interaction that feels “alive” and “human-like.”
Garcia’s legal team argues that Character.AI intentionally crafted a product that is not only highly addictive but also dangerously targeted towards children, effectively entrapping Sewell in a manipulative and harmful relationship that ultimately led to his death. “We believe that if Sewell Setzer had not been using Character.AI, he would still be with us today,” remarked Matthew Bergman, who heads the Social Media Victims Law Center and is representing Garcia in this case.
Despite the ongoing litigation, a spokesperson from Character.AI stated that the company does not comment on such matters. However, they did announce updates aimed at enhancing safety for younger users and providing suicide prevention resources. The company committed to creating an experience for users under 18 that minimizes exposure to sensitive content.
Moreover, Google and its parent company, Alphabet, have also been named in the lawsuit. In the lead-up to his tragic end, Sewell’s emotional attachment to the chatbot deepened, as the lawsuit highlights.
