Indiana mother receives probation after rat attack disfigures her baby

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A woman from Indiana has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to neglect charges related to a horrific incident in which her six-month-old son was mauled by rats, causing serious injuries. This decision comes just weeks after her husband received a lengthy prison sentence for his role in the situation.

On Thursday, a judge in Vanderburgh County handed down a four-year prison sentence to Angel Schonabaum, 29. However, taking into account the year she had already served, the judge suspended the remaining three years, allowing her to serve them on probation, as reported by local news.

In September, Schonabaum entered a guilty plea to a felony charge of neglect of a dependent. Her legal representative has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the case.

The couple was taken into custody after authorities received a 911 call from David Schonabaum, Angel’s husband, who reported that their infant son had sustained severe injuries due to rat bites in their home. Investigators found that the child had experienced over 50 bites and required medical attention.

In September, David Schonabaum was found guilty on multiple felony neglect charges, culminating in a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison handed down in recent weeks.

A detective from the Evansville Police Department described the appalling condition of the child in a probable cause affidavit, noting that the flesh was missing from the tips of all fingers on the child’s right hand, revealing the fingertip bones. Paramedics discovered the infant lying in blood inside his crib, with additional bites on his face, which left him permanently disfigured, according to prosecutor Diana Moers.

Angel Schonabaum and her husband had been residing with her sister, Delaina Thurman, in a household that authorities reported was cluttered with trash and plagued by an ongoing rat infestation.

Thurman subsequently received a two-year probation sentence after admitting guilt to two counts of neglect of a dependent. Court records detail the repercussions and actions taken against those involved in this traumatic situation for the young child.
