SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Authorities declared an attack carried out by a teenager at a police station in northwest Bosnia as an act of terrorism on Friday.
The violent incident took place around 9 p.m. in Bosanska Krupa, where the young assailant, born in 2009, entered the police station and stabbed two officers in what police described as a completely unprovoked act.
Prosecutors are currently investigating the motive and specific circumstances surrounding the attack, categorizing it as a terrorist event. The officer who sustained injuries has been hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
“The motive appears to be an assault on the institution itself, namely the police station, intended to instill fear within the community,” explained Chief Prosecutor Merima Mesanovic. “In addition to uncovering the motive, we will look into whether he received encouragement from any extremist groups.”
Local police chief Adnan Habibija expressed disbelief over the incident, emphasizing the shocking nature of a 14-year-old daring to confront law enforcement by attacking them. “This should serve as a wake-up call for our society to reflect on the current situation,” he remarked.
Due to the suspect’s minor status, officials are limited in the disclosures they can make regarding the incident, but measures to enhance security have been implemented following the assault.
