Roberto Mancini has officially stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Saudi Arabian national football team, a decision confirmed on Thursday by the country’s soccer federation.
The federation announced that Mancini’s departure was by mutual agreement. The Italian manager had previously achieved significant success, notably guiding Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship. His extensive managerial career also includes prestigious roles with clubs like Inter Milan and Manchester City, where he garnered numerous titles.
However, Mancini’s stint with Saudi Arabia was marred by disappointment, particularly at this year’s Asian Cup, where the team was eliminated in the round of 16. His tenure faced additional scrutiny following his decision to leave the field before the conclusion of a penalty shootout against South Korea. This incident drew criticism and led to an apology from Mancini.
Mancini took over as head coach of the Saudi national team in August 2023, shortly after resigning from his post with the Italian national squad. During his managerial career at Inter Milan, he celebrated three Serie A titles, and later, he made history in the Premier League with Manchester City, securing the championship in dramatic fashion thanks to Sergio Aguero’s iconic goal on the final day of the 2011-2012 season.
The future of the Saudi Arabian national team now remains uncertain as officials look for a new head coach to guide them through upcoming challenges.
