KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs officially announced a trade acquisition involving wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, sending a conditional fifth-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs are looking to bolster their receiver corps, which has been severely impacted by injuries this season.
To make room for Hopkins, the team has placed wide receiver Skyy Moore on injured reserve due to a “core muscle injury.” Although Moore was not listed on the injury report for Sunday’s game against Las Vegas following Wednesday’s practice, the team decided to take precautionary measures.
The Chiefs have been in urgent need of receiving talent, particularly after Marquise Brown underwent shoulder surgery before the season started. In addition, Rashee Rice is out for the remainder of the season following knee surgery, and JuJu Smith-Schuster sustained a hamstring injury during last week’s victory against the 49ers.
Hopkins will join the Chiefs despite experiencing a knee issue for much of the ongoing season. The fifth-round draft pick that the Titans are receiving will be in the 2025 draft; however, this pick could elevate to a fourth-rounder based on Hopkins’ playing time with the Chiefs, specifically if he participates in 60% of the team’s snaps and they reach the Super Bowl. The Titans will also cover $2.5 million of his remaining salary, which is beneficial for the Chiefs, who are currently facing salary cap limitations.
This trade for Hopkins marks the third notable wide receiver transaction within the span of just over a week. Last Tuesday, Davante Adams was traded from the Raiders to the Jets, reuniting with his former Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a conditional third-round pick in the upcoming draft. Subsequently, the Bills traded for Amari Cooper along with a sixth-round pick from the Browns in exchange for a third-round pick and a seventh-round pick in the 2026 draft.
During his second season with the Titans, the 32-year-old Hopkins recorded only 15 receptions for 173 yards and one touchdown. However, he brings a wealth of experience to the Chiefs, having accumulated 943 catches, 12,528 receiving yards, and 79 touchdowns throughout a career primarily spent with the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans. His presence is particularly valuable as the Chiefs have faced challenges scoring touchdowns within the red zone.
This marks the third consecutive season in which the Chiefs have sought external help for their receiving unit. Two years ago, they traded for Kadarius Toney from the Giants, although he was released prior to this season, and last year they brought in Mecole Hardman from the Jets.
