NEW YORK — In a grand celebration, Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and their fellow teammates from the Liberty were greeted with a spectacular display of ticker tape as they marked their historic WNBA championship win in the Canyon of Heroes, located in downtown Manhattan.
On Thursday, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Mayor Eric Adams were present among the large crowd of supporters who lined the streets to pay tribute to the team.
Securing their first-ever championship title, the Liberty emerged victorious against the Minnesota Lynx in a thrilling overtime Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday.
New York has a rich history of hosting over 200 ticker-tape parades, with the most recent one recognizing a women’s sports team occurring in 2019 when the U.S. soccer team celebrated their World Cup victory. Following that event, there was another parade two years later dedicated to essential workers and first responders for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, not every New York sports champion has enjoyed the privilege of a ticker-tape parade. For instance, the New York City FC received a celebration at City Hall after their first Major League Soccer championship win in 2021, rather than the grander event. Similarly, last year, NY/NJ Gotham FC celebrated their triumph in the NWSL women’s professional soccer league, but did not have a ticker-tape parade in their honor either.
