GREEN BAY, Wis. — Just two weeks after his dismissal as head coach of the New York Jets, Robert Saleh returned to the football scene by assisting the Green Bay Packers in practice on Wednesday. Formerly focused on defense, Saleh is lending his expertise to observe and assess the Packers’ offensive strategies. According to Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur, Saleh’s involvement will extend until Thursday, though the specifics of his ongoing assistance remain uncertain as the situation is described as “pretty fluid.”
LaFleur expressed that Saleh’s presence provides a valuable opportunity for both parties. “His insight can guide us on how to engage opposing defenses, along with identifying any weaknesses,” he noted. LaFleur and Saleh share a long friendship, having previously collaborated as graduate assistants at Central Michigan about 20 years ago and later as part of the coaching staff for the Houston Texans from 2008 to 2009.
It was no surprise that the two connected shortly after Saleh’s firing on October 8, where he concluded his tenure with a record of 20 wins and 36 losses. The Jets let him go after starting the season with a 2-3 record. Since then, the team has faced struggles under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, losing to both the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“LaFleur mentioned that he wanted to offer Saleh an opportunity to stay engaged in football without applying any pressure. He simply conveyed, ‘If you want to stay involved, the opportunity is here for you,’” he recalled. LaFleur compared this situation to that of Aubrey Pleasant, who served as an offensive consultant for the Packers after his firing from the Detroit Lions’ staff two years ago. Currently, Pleasant is with the Los Angeles Rams as their defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator.
While Saleh’s experience primarily lies in defense, he is now focusing on the Packers’ offensive dynamics. The team, currently standing at 5-2, is preparing for a matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5) this upcoming Sunday, riding a three-game winning streak.
LaFleur believes Saleh’s defensive acumen will be invaluable in crafting offensive strategies. “He possesses an elite defensive mind, which is why I want him aiding us on the offensive end,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of a multi-faceted attack strategy.
Quarterback Jordan Love echoed LaFleur’s sentiments, highlighting that Saleh’s input will enhance their understanding of defensive perspectives. “His perspective can help us grasp what defenses are contemplating, providing insights that offensive minds may overlook,” Love added, affirming the potential benefits of Saleh’s involvement.
In other team news, defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt participated in a limited capacity during practice on Wednesday after missing the last three games due to an ankle injury, indicating confidence in being fit for Sunday’s game. However, cornerback Corey Ballentine (ankle), left guard Elgton Jenkins, center Josh Myers (wrist), and linebacker Quay Walker (concussion) were absent from practice.
