GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska — A 22-year-old man from Ohio has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in connection with the stabbing deaths of a couple at a rest stop along Interstate 80 in Nebraska. This plea was submitted by James Thompson Jr. on Tuesday, as reported by local sources. He faces several charges, including first-degree murder for the June 19 attack on 72-year-old Gary Weaver and his 71-year-old spouse, Mary Weaver, both residents of Eureka, Missouri. In addition to the murder charge, Thompson is also facing charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery, evading arrest, and multiple weapons offenses.
According to investigators, witnesses at the scene described Thompson demanding the keys to a Jeep attached to the Weavers’ RV. It was during this confrontation that he allegedly stabbed both individuals, leaving them with life-threatening injuries. Following the attack, Gary Weaver succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
Details surrounding the incident indicate that a portion of the violent episode was recorded by a truck driver’s dash camera, which has been used as evidence in the case. Following the stabbing, authorities reported that Thompson fled the scene. A Nebraska State trooper later spotted him as he exited the interstate near Wood River. This encounter led to a high-speed chase, during which Thompson reportedly reached speeds of 120 mph (193 kph) before crashing his vehicle into the Platte River. Authorities apprehended him shortly after, with blood visible on his shirt and several cuts on his hands.
Concern regarding Thompson’s mental health had been previously raised by his public defender. However, on October 1, assessments confirmed that he was competent to stand trial. The ongoing proceedings will further address the charges against him.
