NICOSIA, Cyprus — On Wednesday, U.S. and Cypriot officials initiated a strategic dialogue aimed at enhancing security and stability in a region beset by crises. This initiative encompasses various measures, such as counterterrorism training for personnel from several Middle Eastern nations and monitoring the evasion of sanctions.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, expressed at a press briefing that this milestone signifies a significant progression in the relationship between the two nations. He described being part of this occasion as a historic undertaking.
Cyprus has demonstrated a marked shift in foreign policy, favoring deeper ties with the U.S. This transition became more pronounced following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, as the nation had previously navigated a careful balance between Washington and Moscow.
O’Brien highlighted the establishment of a U.S.-funded training center in Cyprus known as CYCLOPS. This facility focuses on preparing personnel from Cyprus and its neighboring regions, covering areas such as maritime security, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism methods.
Cyprus’ Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, reaffirmed his government’s dedication to working closely with U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Justice and the FBI, to tackle illicit financial activities and prevent sanctions evasion related to Russia and other nations.
The FBI is actively involved in equipping Cypriot police with the necessary skills to recognize and prosecute cases linked to illegal financing and sanctions avoidance imposed by the U.S., European Union, and United Nations on various countries.
O’Brien noted the significance of addressing regional instability, stating, “It’s dealing with crises like we see from the instability in the region.” He emphasized the importance of law enforcement collaboration to ensure that the safety of citizens remains a priority.
Minister Kombos remarked that initiating this dialogue presents an opportunity for Cyprus to assert itself as a reliable strategic partner for the U.S., particularly in humanitarian efforts. He underscored the creation of a maritime corridor earlier in the year, which facilitates the transport of humanitarian aid from Cyprus to Gaza.
In a further enhancement of their relations, Cyprus and the U.S. formalized a defense cooperation framework last month. This agreement outlines the strategies both nations can adopt to effectively address regional humanitarian crises and security challenges.
