LOS ANGELES — Rudy Gobert announced on Tuesday evening that he has finalized a contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Reports from various media outlets, including ESPN, highlighted that Gobert is set to receive a three-year extension worth $110 million. The French center joined the Timberwolves in a trade from the Utah Jazz in 2022.
Following the Timberwolves’ 110-103 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers in their season opener, Gobert chose not to delve into the details of the new agreement. However, he expressed his satisfaction with remaining in Minnesota and noted how the structure of this new contract could help the team enhance its competitiveness.
“I believe it was about creating a mutually beneficial situation,” Gobert remarked. “I’m content here, and my family shares that sentiment. I aim to secure a championship for this team—also, my previous contract for next year was quite substantial. It was beneficial for the Timberwolves to retain our players, and it also brought me longer-term security, which was essential for both parties. I feel grateful and joyful, and regardless of the contract, my ultimate goal remains the same: to win the championship.”
At 32 years old, Gobert had a player option worth $46.6 million for the 2025-26 season in his last contract. This new agreement replaces that option and extends his tenure with the Timberwolves, who made it to the Western Conference finals for the first time in twenty years last season.
“I think it’s crucial to find a balance,” Gobert added. “Every year I negotiate a contract, I try to leave some room for the team. I acknowledge my fortunate position and the blessings I have received. It’s essential not to be too greedy and ensure our team’s competitiveness remains a priority. I am thankful that I have such supportive individuals around me.”
Before his time with the Timberwolves, Gobert played nine seasons with the Jazz, who traded him away at a significant cost, sending multiple players—including current Lakers player Jarred Vanderbilt—along with four first-round draft picks.
Gobert has proven to be a valuable asset for Minnesota, having averaged 14 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks last season while claiming his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award. Recently, Minnesota traded fellow big man Karl-Anthony Towns to New York in a deal that saw Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo joining the roster, making Gobert’s performance in the paint even more critical for the Timberwolves.
“It’s never been purely about the money,” Gobert stated. “At this stage of my career, it’s more about finding a place where I feel at home and can pursue a championship. Everyone from the coaches to other players and the organization has welcomed me and provided an environment for me to thrive.”
According to reports, Gobert’s new contract also includes a player option for the 2027-28 season and a trade kicker, ensuring further flexibility in his career moving forward.
