MONTREAL — In an exhilarating start to the MLS Cup playoffs, Atlanta United triumphed over CF Montreal in a thrilling penalty shootout, winning 5-4 after the two teams ended regulation in a 2-2 deadlock on Tuesday night.
The victory marked only the second road playoff win in the history of Atlanta United, their first since November 4, 2018, when they defeated New York City FC. Now, the team is set to embark on a best-of-three series this Friday against Miami, which is making its debut in playoff action.
During the penalty shootout, Atlanta’s goalkeeper Brad Guzan played a crucial role, saving a kick from Tom Pearce during Montreal’s second attempt. Saba Lobjanidze ultimately secured the win for Atlanta by converting the decisive penalty.
Atlanta displayed dominance early in the match, leading 2-0 at the half. Brooks Lennon opened the scoring in the 29th minute, netting his first goal of the season with a precise header following a cross from Pedro Amador. Just before the halftime whistle, Atlanta’s Stian Gregersen scored the second goal at the 44-minute mark, heading in a free kick from teammate Alexey Miranchuk, putting the visitors in a comfortable position.
Montreal mounted a comeback after halftime, with Josef Martínez, a former star for Atlanta, scoring twice to level the game. His first goal came in the 63rd minute, tapping in from close range after Guzan could not hold onto a long-range shot. Then, in the closing stages of the match, Montreal earned a penalty kick in the 87th minute, which Martínez converted effortlessly, marking his eighth goal in the last six matches. The two players, Martínez and Guzan, exchanged a few words following the goal, highlighting the competitive spirit of the encounter.
