The Chicago Blackhawks have announced the activation of defenseman Artyom Levshunov while also assigning the franchise’s second overall pick from this year’s NHL draft to the minor leagues.
Levshunov, who is just 18 years old, sustained an injury to his right foot while blocking a shot at a summer 3-on-3 tournament. The pain in his foot persisted during training sessions, prompting him to undergo an MRI that ultimately confirmed a fracture.
On Tuesday, Levshunov skated with the team during the morning practice before being sent to the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League (AHL). He expressed his frustration about being sidelined.
“It was a bit tedious, just skating alone with the skills coach,” Levshunov remarked. “Today, I feel thrilled to be back with my teammates.”
Originally from Belarus, Levshunov had an impressive single season at Michigan State, where he recorded nine goals and 26 assists. He earned recognition as both the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Freshman of the Year.
In July, he formalized his connection with Chicago by signing a three-year entry-level contract, which is valued at a cap hit of $975,000 per year.
While recovering, Levshunov gained valuable experience by being in close proximity to the NHL team.
“We’ve involved him in all activities. He’s been at the rink, engaging with everyone all day long,” said coach Luke Richardson. “He’s very sociable and enjoys talking, which is beneficial. This interaction will assist him with any language hurdles and help him feel more at ease. Participating in meetings and grasping the system will accelerate his integration into the organization.”
Additionally, Richardson provided an update on veteran defenseman Alec Martinez, who is currently dealing with a right groin injury.
“We’re unsure about the exact timeline for his return,” Richardson explained. “I’m confident he’ll travel with us for the upcoming road trip, but I can’t guarantee he’ll be ready to play before that.”
