ASHBURN, Va. — Jamin Davis was released by the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, marking the end of his time with the team that began when he was selected as a first-round draft choice in 2021.
Davis was taken as the 19th overall pick with the expectation that he would develop into a middle linebacker. However, early in his career, the previous coaching staff, under head coach Ron Rivera, shifted him to an outside linebacker position. The current management team, which includes general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, attempted to rejuvenate his performance by converting him to defensive end.
Despite these changes, Davis found himself as a healthy scratch on multiple occasions, and during the current season, he participated in just under 21% of the defensive plays, recording 13 tackles over five games. His departure leaves cornerback Emmanuel Forbes as the only remaining first-round selection from Rivera’s four drafts with the Commanders.
As Washington prepares for its upcoming game against Chicago, there are concerns regarding the availability of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is dealing with a rib injury, and left tackle Brandon Coleman, who is in concussion protocol. Coach Quinn stated on Monday that he is not overly concerned about the need to place players on injured reserve, and the release of Davis potentially opens a valuable spot on the 53-man roster that could be utilized.
Additionally, the NFL announced that depth cornerback Kevon Seymour has been handed a six-game suspension for breaching the league’s performance-enhancement regulations. In his seventh season within the league — having played for teams such as Buffalo, Carolina, Philadelphia, and Baltimore — Seymour has only been active for two games this year, contributing just one tackle.
In response to roster adjustments, the Commanders have signed safety Ben Nikkel and wide receiver Michael Strachan to their practice squad, while also releasing safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad.
