COLUMBIA, S.C. — A’ja Wilson is set to receive yet another prestigious accolade as the University of South Carolina will retire her jersey number 22 at the Colonial Life Arena.
This announcement was made public on Tuesday, with the ceremony scheduled for February 2, prior to the highly anticipated game between the top-ranked South Carolina team and Auburn.
Wilson has already been honored with a statue located in front of the arena since 2021, marking her significant contributions to the women’s basketball program.
She made history as the first player of the program to be rated as the No. 1 recruit while also being a three-time Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
Under her leadership, the Gamecocks claimed their first national championship title in 2017.
In terms of individual achievements, Wilson is South Carolina’s all-time scorer, having amassed an impressive 2,389 points throughout her collegiate career.
Following her time at South Carolina, she was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA in 2018.
Since joining the professional ranks, she has secured two championships with the Las Vegas Aces and was named WNBA MVP for the third time just this past season.
In addition to her league success, Wilson also added to her accolades this past summer by earning a second gold medal as she captained the U.S. national team to victory at the Olympics held in Paris.
