NEW YORK — As the World Series approaches, the New York Yankees are considering the option of adding a 13th pitcher to their roster for the matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In their previous postseason series, the Yankees started with 12 pitchers and 14 position players during the AL Championship Series against Cleveland, while utilizing 11 pitchers and 15 position players in the Division Series against Kansas City.

Manager Aaron Boone indicated on Tuesday that the possibility of including an extra pitcher remains on the table, stating, “Could be 13. We’ll see.”

Left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes, who has been out of action since September 18 due to a flexor strain in his elbow, was scheduled to participate in batting practice on Tuesday, which raises the likelihood of his inclusion in the roster. The final roster for the World Series must be submitted approximately seven hours before Friday’s opening game in Los Angeles.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who returned after dealing with two fractured fingers, was added to the squad for the series against the Guardians, along with right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman. In the process, the Yankees opted to drop first baseman Ben Rice and speedy outfielder Duke Ellis from their roster.

Alongside key starters like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil, the Yankees also included several relievers: right-handers Luke Weaver, Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, Jake Cousins, Ian Hamilton, and Marcus Stroman, along with left-handers Tim Hill and Tim Mayza for the series against Cleveland.

Unfortunately, Ian Hamilton experienced a calf strain while covering first base during Game 3 last Thursday, leading to his replacement by right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. the next day.

The Yankees aim to claim their 28th championship trophy and strive for a title that has eluded them since 2009.
