NEW YORK — A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has been implicated in a scheme to assassinate an Iranian American writer on U.S. territory, as detailed in a revised indictment released on Tuesday.
Ruhollah Bazghandi, along with three other accomplices, has been indicted in connection with the plot against Masih Alinejad. At present, Bazghandi remains free and has not been detained.
Alinejad, an outspoken journalist and opposition figure, has been residing in New York City in exile. Although her name is not mentioned in the court documents, she confirmed to the media that she was the target of the assassination attempt.
She escaped from Iran after the controversial presidential elections in 2009, which led to widespread protests across the nation.
According to the legal documents, Bazghandi holds the rank of brigadier general and formerly acted as the head of the Revolutionary Guards’ counterintelligence division.
The U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a global terrorist organization in October 2017, citing its significant role in facilitating Iran’s engagement in international terrorism. In April 2023, this office highlighted Bazghandi’s involvement in assassination schemes targeting journalists, Israeli nationals, and others perceived as adversaries of Iran, as well as his participation in the wrongful detention of foreign prisoners in Iran and operations conducted in Syria by the Revolutionary Guards’ counterintelligence team, according to the indictment.
