FRISCO, Texas — Micah Parsons finds himself uncertain about his participation in a crucial upcoming game for the Dallas Cowboys against their traditional rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, due to a high ankle sprain. The absence of the two-time All-Pro pass rusher, if it extends into Sunday night’s matchups, will mark a third consecutive game he has sat out.
“It’s been a challenging time for me,” Parsons stated Monday as the Cowboys (3-3) returned from their bye week. “I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on myself and consider how I can improve, as well as what I can do to contribute to the team’s success. I’m utilizing this time away, but I’m eager to get back on the field.”
His time missed includes a tight 20-17 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers and a heavy 47-9 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Lions, which was part of an unfortunate streak of home losses. This is particularly notable as the Cowboys’ defense has struggled significantly during his absence, extending a sequence of disappointing defensive performances.
The upcoming game against the 49ers (3-4) will occur exactly one month after Parsons sustained his injury in the second half of a 20-15 victory over the New York Giants. Throughout his NFL career, the only other game he missed was due to COVID-19 during his rookie season.
This year, Parsons was an integral part of the team during the Cowboys’ first two home games and their shocking playoff exit against the Packers in the previous season. With the 49ers dealing with their own injury concerns, there is significant work ahead for Parsons and the Dallas defense.
In addition, linebacker Eric Kendricks may make a return after he missed a game due to calf and shoulder injuries. There is also the potential for cornerback DaRon Bland to debut this season; he has been recovering from foot surgery. His practice window was opened prior to the Lions game, and his return could boost the struggling defense.
Currently, the Cowboys are struggling defensively, ranking in the lower third in the NFL for overall and rushing defense, and they sit at 31st in points allowed. The once-frequent takeaways that have characterized the team’s defensive play have been virtually nonexistent this season, with only five through six games.
Reflecting on his time off, Parsons emphasized the importance of supporting his teammates’ development. “I think about watching the film and consider the ways I can set up others for success,” he explained. “It’s beneficial for them to gain valuable experience during this time.”
Decisions on Parsons’ potential return to action are in the hands of the athletic trainers and coaching staff. The Cowboys have not placed him on the injured reserve list, indicating that his return for the game against the 49ers is a realistic possibility.
“I maintain high hopes,” Parsons conveyed. “I thrive on challenges and I’m ready to exceed expectations. Ultimately, I’ll defer to my trainers and coaching staff on the decision.”
Coach Mike McCarthy noted that Parsons was among several players undergoing treatment during the bye week, demonstrating diligence and determination. “I’m always appreciative of the effort and progress I see. Despite it being an off week, the number of players I’ve seen at the facility has been impressive. Micah is making strides,” he said.
In addition to Parsons’ status, two other rookie players are notable injury concerns this week: left tackle Tyler Guyton (knee) and cornerback Caelen Carson (shoulder). Guyton was listed as active but did not see playtime against the Lions, while Carson has been out for the last three games.
