CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Coach Dave Canales made the controversial decision to bench Bryce Young, this year’s No. 1 draft pick, just two weeks into the current season, asserting that veteran Andy Dalton was better positioned to help the Carolina Panthers win games. As the team continues to struggle with a record of 1-6 and facing a four-game losing streak under Dalton, questions are rising regarding the direction of the franchise. The Panthers find themselves accumulating injuries and sitting among the league’s worst defensively, leading to the strong possibility they will secure a top-five pick in the upcoming 2025 draft, potentially even the first overall pick. This would enable them to select one of the elite quarterbacks emerging from college next April.

It has become evident that the Panthers need to give Young another chance to play, though that doesn’t appear likely in the immediate future. Following a defeat against the Washington Commanders, Canales confirmed that Dalton will remain the starting quarterback for the upcoming game against the Denver Broncos. Young’s initial stint as a starting quarterback has not been successful; he finished his rookie season with a disappointing 2-14 record and faltered in his first two starts this season, ultimately leading to his benching prior to the Week 3 matchup against the Raiders.

While Dalton initially appeared to revitalize the Panthers, highlighted by a significant victory in Las Vegas, his performance has since deteriorated. In a recent game against the Commanders, the 36-year-old quarterback managed only 93 yards passing and suffered two interceptions in the first quarter alone, including one that resulted in a touchdown against his team. The Panthers were ultimately overwhelmed, with a final score of 40-7.

The organization has invested heavily in Young, having traded multiple draft picks and star wide receiver D.J. Moore to move up for his selection over C.J. Stroud. However, team owner David Tepper, known for making swift decisions regarding poor investments, has previously parted ways with various staff and players, suggesting he may not hesitate to do so again if necessary.

At this juncture, playing Young might present the Panthers with no significant downside. By giving him more playing time, the team could potentially find a cornerstone player to build upon as they move forward. If Young shows promise, it could reinforce the decision to keep him, but if he fails to perform, Carolina will find themselves in a favorable position to draft another quarterback and move past what has arguably been a major misstep in their recent history.

In terms of what’s currently working for the Panthers, the situation seems bleak. The defense has allowed a staggering 243 points over their first seven games, which ties for the third-most points ever allowed during the Super Bowl era. The 1973 Houston Oilers and 1966 Atlanta Falcons are the only teams that allowed more. With eight players ruled out due to injuries before their most recent game, and other key starters out for the season, the defense’s struggles have been compounded. The offense has similarly faltered, with only sporadic success noted in the running game.

On the flip side, the team’s run defense was ranked poorly heading into their last game, suffering further as they allowed 214 rushing yards to the Commanders. Injuries have significantly affected the linebacker position, where a combination of player absences left them thin on personnel.

Despite recent challenges, backup running back Miles Sanders had a standout performance, showcasing his skills with 95 yards spread over nine touches, including a notable six receptions producing 61 yards. Chuba Hubbard contributed with a rushing touchdown as well. Looking forward, rookie running back Jonathan Brooks is expected to return to action soon, which could influence the running back situation as the trade deadline approaches.

However, challenges remain for Canales, the first-year head coach, who despite his optimistic demeanor has seen the team struggle to compete effectively in many of their matchups.

Injuries remain a concern for the team, although they appeared to escape the latest game without additional injuries. However, the Panthers have faced substantial physical challenges leading up to matches with key players such as Jadeveon Clowney and others still sidelined. Wide receiver Adam Thielen’s status remains unclear as they progress into Week 8, though his return could greatly enhance the offense.

Statistically speaking, the Panthers have been outscored by a staggering margin of 154-62 in the first half across this season.

Moving forward, Carolina will be looking to snap their four-game losing streak as they prepare to face the Denver Broncos (4-3) on Sunday. The Panthers have struggled on the road, coming off a streak of 12 losses in their last 13 away games dating back to last season.
