SALT LAKE CITY — The offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Utah, Andy Ludwig, has announced his resignation, as confirmed by the school on Sunday evening.
Ludwig’s exit follows a disappointing stretch for the Utes, who have dropped three consecutive games, bringing their current record to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12 Conference. During this losing streak, the team has struggled offensively, managing to score only 36 points, culminating in a lackluster 13-7 defeat to TCU on Saturday. In that matchup, Utah’s offense struggled significantly, recording a season-low of 68 rushing yards, averaging just 2.6 yards per carry, and was forced to punt on 11 of their 14 total drives.
In terms of performance metrics, Utah currently sits at the bottom of the Big 12 in scoring offense, averaging 24.0 points per game, and ranks second-to-last in total offense with an average of 385.9 yards per game. The team was initially projected to contend for the Big 12 title, as indicated by preseason assessments.
“Andy is a true professional, and we extend our gratitude to him for his unwavering commitment to our program over the span of 10 seasons,” stated Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. “Coach Ludwig has played a crucial role in our achievements here at Utah, and I hold a deep respect and appreciation for him both as a coach and as an individual. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
This resignation marks Ludwig’s second term as the Utes’ offensive coordinator; he was part of Whittingham’s coaching staff from 2005 to 2008 before taking on offensive coordinator roles at various institutions including California, San Diego State, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt. He returned to Utah in 2019 after a lengthy career elsewhere.
Prior to his first tenure at Utah, Ludwig also served as an offensive coordinator for programs at Oregon, Fresno State, and Cal Poly. His impact on the program has been substantial, and his departure introduces a period of adjustment for the Utes as they seek to revive their offensive capabilities moving forward.
