GREENVILLE, N.C. — East Carolina University has parted ways with head coach Mike Houston following a five-year tenure with the football program.
The decision was announced by athletic director Jon Gilbert on Sunday, in the wake of the Pirates’ 45-28 defeat at the hands of No. 23 Army, leaving the team’s record at 3-4 for the season.
In the interim, defensive coordinator Blake Harrell has been appointed as the acting head coach for the remainder of the season.
“We had high hopes for continued success after our back-to-back bowl appearances,” Gilbert stated, referencing the Pirates’ participation in bowl games in 2021 and 2022.
“Regrettably, the desirable outcomes have not materialized, necessitating a change to propel the program forward.”
Houston’s tenure saw the team struggle significantly, finishing the previous season with a disappointing 2-10 record.
Overall, his record stands at 27 wins and 38 losses since he took over the program in 2019.
Prior to joining East Carolina, Houston achieved significant success at James Madison, where he led the team to an FCS national championship in 2016.
The program is now looking to refresh its direction as it navigates the remainder of the season under new leadership.
