NEW YORK — Jake Cady led the Wagner Seahawks to a 14-0 victory over St. Francis (PA) on Saturday, throwing two touchdown passes, while the team’s defense excelled with two interceptions and a remarkable nine sacks.
Cady completed 24 of his 38 passes for a total of 290 yards, though he did throw an interception during Wagner’s opening drive. The highlight of the first quarter was a 24-yard touchdown pass to Christian Tait, capping a solid 10-play drive covering 80 yards. Later in the second quarter, the Seahawks executed another impressive series, going 85 yards in just seven plays, culminating in a 31-yard touchdown pass to Chase Stafford.
On the other side, St. Francis struggled offensively, finishing with two critical drives that both fell short on fourth-down attempts, one at the conclusion of each half. These significant drives accumulated 21 plays for 115 yards; however, the rest of their offensive efforts resulted in just 72 yards, primarily due to the relentless pressure from Wagner’s defense.
Nick Whitfield Jr. of St. Francis managed to complete 13 of 24 passes for 162 yards, but he was hindered by two interceptions and five sacks during the game. His teammate Jeff Hoenstine had a challenging outing as well, completing 3 of 6 passes for only 2 yards while suffering four sacks. Due to the persistent pressure, St. Francis recorded only 23 rushing yards throughout the game.
Wagner struggled on the ground as well, managing a mere 47 rushing yards overall, but their potent passing game and a formidable defense propelled them to an important conference win.
