Florian Wirtz made a notable return from injury to assist Bayer Leverkusen in clinching a 2-1 victory against a strong Eintracht Frankfurt side in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The game saw Frankfurt vehemently protesting for a penalty in the dying moments, which they felt was justified.
In a critical moment, Hugo Ekitiké seemed poised to capitalize by heading the ball into an empty net after a mix-up involving goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky and defender Jonathan Tah. However, Tah managed to intervene just in time, causing Ekitiké to lose his balance and miss the ball altogether.
Despite Frankfurt’s strong appeals, the referee did not grant them the penalty. Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface stepped up to secure the victory with a goal in the 72nd minute. Earlier, Boniface had an opportunity to score from the penalty spot; however, his weak attempt was turned away by Kevin Trapp in the ninth minute.
Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush showcased his penalty-taking skills just a few minutes later, converting a kick into the left corner after a careless foul by Robert Andrich. This marked Marmoush’s ninth goal in just seven Bundesliga matches, continuing his impressive six-game scoring streak.
Andrich, however, redeemed himself by finding the equalizer at the 25-minute mark. He combined effectively with Amine Adli and Martin Terrier before finishing calmly inside the far post to level the score.
Boniface eventually broke the tie when Trapp inadvertently deflected a cross from Wirtz, allowing Boniface to score easily with a header. Leverkusen had indicated earlier in the week that Wirtz had sustained an ankle injury while representing Germany on international duty.
Other Bundesliga matches saw Xavi Simons excel for Leipzig, leading them to a 2-0 victory over Mainz. Meanwhile, Freiburg convincingly defeated Augsburg 3-1 at home, Borussia Mönchengladbach edged past Heidenheim with a 3-2 win, and Hoffenheim took down winless Bochum 3-1. Later in the day, Bayern Munich was set to face Stuttgart.
