CLEVELAND — The New York Yankees will be without reliever Ian Hamilton for the remainder of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians after he sustained a left calf injury during Game 3 on Thursday night.

In response to this setback, the Yankees have called up Mark Leiter Jr. to take Hamilton’s place on the roster. This change was implemented just hours prior to Game 4, scheduled for Friday.

Hamilton’s injury occurred while he was covering first base in the sixth inning when he appeared to step awkwardly. The situation worsened for the Yankees as they relinquished a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning and ultimately lost the game 7-5. Cleveland managed to tie the game thanks to a home run from rookie Jhonkensy Noel, followed by a walk-off hit from David Fry in the 10th inning.

As it stands, New York leads the series 2-1 despite the setback. Over the course of the season, Hamilton posted an 0-1 record with a 3.82 ERA across 35 games. He had missed nearly three months earlier in the season due to a strained side muscle but returned to action in mid-September and made an appearance in the AL Division Series against Kansas City.

The incident that led to Hamilton’s injury began when Guardians rookie Daniel Schneemann hit a ground ball to Yankees first baseman Jon Berti, who mishandled it. Hamilton rushed to cover the base but seemed to step awkwardly, which led to a wild pitch during warmups before manager Aaron Boone decided to substitute him.

Following the evaluation, the team reported that Hamilton was experiencing calf tightness.

Leiter, who has stepped into the relief role, has a record of 2-1 with a 4.98 ERA over 21 games for the Yankees this season. He was brought into the team in a trade from the Chicago Cubs in July and previously compiled a 2-4 record with a 4.21 ERA in 39 games while with Chicago.
