PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh has officially appointed Allen Greene as its new athletic director.
The announcement was made on Friday, with Greene succeeding Heather Lyke, who was dismissed from her position earlier in September, leaving her contract with only a few months remaining.
Currently, Greene serves as the senior deputy athletics director at the University of Tennessee and is set to begin his new role at Pitt on November 1.
He previously held the position of athletic director at Auburn University from 2018 to 2022.
Chancellor Joan Gabel expressed confidence in Greene’s leadership potential, stating that he embodies the values of Pitt and possesses the necessary skills and experience to advance the university’s athletics program, both in terms of sports performance and academic achievement.
Greene steps into his role at a time when the university’s athletic teams are enjoying a prosperous season. The football team is currently ranked 20th nationally and boasts an impressive record of 6-0, marking the best start since 1982.
Additionally, the women’s volleyball team is ranked No. 1, while the men’s soccer team holds a No. 4 position.
However, Greene will also face significant challenges outside of competition. The university is in the process of developing a major capital project dubbed “Victory Heights,” which will accommodate more than a dozen Olympic sports, including gymnastics and wrestling.
The anticipated cost of the project is $240 million, and it has encountered difficulties in securing private funding.
In a statement, Greene highlighted the ambitious vision of Pitt, which he found inspiring following his initial conversation with Chancellor Gabel.
He embraced the challenge and expressed enthusiasm for the direction in which the university seeks to expand its aspirations in all its endeavors.
