Emma Hayes announces USWNT lineup for inaugural matches following Olympic gold victory

Trinity Rodman will be absent from three upcoming matches for the U.S. women’s national soccer team as she continues her recovery from a back injury.

Coach Emma Hayes announced her lineup on Thursday, which will face Iceland on October 24 in Austin, Texas, and again on October 27 in Nashville. Following these games, the team will take on Argentina on October 30 in Louisville, Kentucky.

These matches mark the first for the U.S. team after their gold medal success at the Paris Olympics, and the roster features 18 players from the squad that competed in France.

“There’s no doubt that last summer was remarkable, and we want to use these three games to celebrate some incredible achievements and players,” Hayes commented. “However, we cannot become complacent. Our focus must remain forward, and we aim to continue pursuing new heights.”

Hayes has called up a total of 26 players for this training camp, though only 23 will be selected to play in each game.

Rodman, who represents the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League, experienced severe back spasms that necessitated her being taken off the field in a wheelchair during a match against the Kansas City Current last month.

She made her return to the field as a substitute in the Spirit’s recent win over Racing Louisville, marking her first appearance since the injury.

Additionally, Hayes has included six players who could potentially earn their first caps for the national team: midfielder Hal Hershfelt, defender Emily Sams, center back Eva Gaetino, defender Alyssa Malonson, forward Yazmeen Ryan, and forward Emma Sears.

The team will also celebrate veteran defender Kelley O’Hara with a special retirement ceremony during halftime in Nashville.

The roster for the U.S. team is as follows:
