Hyundai has issued an important safety alert for owners of approximately 1,600 Nexo hydrogen fuel cell SUVs in the United States and Canada, advising them to park their vehicles outdoors and away from any structures. This caution comes due to potential hazards involving fuel leaks and the associated risk of fire.
The recall affects models manufactured between 2019 and 2024. Documentation released by U.S. safety regulators indicates that a pressure relief device within the system may fail, resulting in a hydrogen leak that could ignite a fire, even while the vehicles are parked and not in use.
The company has confirmed that, while the SUVs remain safe to drive, it is critical for owners to keep them parked outside until necessary repairs are completed. Notably, Hyundai has reported no incidents of fires or injuries linked to this issue in the U.S. or Canada; however, inquiries about possible incidents in other countries are ongoing.
Notifications to vehicle owners are set to begin on December 10, informing them of the recall. Authorized dealers will be responsible for replacing the faulty pressure release devices. Hyundai has emphasized its commitment to customer safety, stating that this recall is a precautionary measure to uphold the well-being of its clientele.
