NEW YORK — The 75th anniversary ceremony of the National Book Awards promises to be a celebration of literature that also includes moments of humor and music.
On Thursday, the National Book Foundation revealed that Kate McKinnon, known for her work on “Saturday Night Live,” will serve as the host for the event taking place on November 20 at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan.
In addition, Oscar and Grammy-winning artist Jon Batiste is set to deliver a musical performance during the ceremony.
Judges for the awards will unveil the winners across five categories, with notable finalists including Salman Rushdie and Percival Everett.
While McKinnon is not nominated for an award, she recently ventured into the literary world with her children’s book titled “The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science,” which was released earlier this month.
“I have been an avid reader my entire life and feel truly honored to be part of this event that highlights the transformative influence of books, while honoring some of today’s most exceptional storytellers,” McKinnon expressed in a statement.
Reflecting on her love for reading, she recalled how she was fortunate to grow up surrounded by various books, ranging from the adventures of Pippi Longstocking to detailed guides on iguana care, which enriched her outlook on life and broadened her understanding.
Batiste, whose new album “Beethoven Blues” is scheduled to be released just days before the awards ceremony, shared his appreciation for the written word, describing books as “sacred sources of refuge, insight, and humanity, shaping the world as we know it.”
“I am thrilled to be involved in honoring extraordinary artistry, ingenuity, and the profound impact of literary expression,” he added.
While having musical performances is unusual at the National Book Awards, celebrity hosts have graced the event in the past, including notable figures like Steve Martin in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
