WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The All Blacks have been forced to make three injury-related adjustments to their team ahead of their scheduled departure on Thursday for test matches in Japan and Europe.
Backrow players Ethan Blackadder, Luke Jacobson, and Dalton Papali’i will not make the trip to Japan due to their respective injuries. Blackadder is suffering from a calf injury, Jacobson has a broken thumb, and Papali’i is dealing with a hamstring issue.
In their places, the All Blacks have called up uncapped Hurricanes flanker Peter Lakai and Chiefs lock Josh Lord to join the squad as replacements.
Coach Scott Robertson expressed his disappointment regarding the injuries. “This is hugely disappointing for Ethan, Luke, and Dalton, but we know they will focus on their recovery and aim to return as soon as possible,” he remarked. “On the positive side, this situation creates opportunities for other players. We are thrilled to have Josh back in the squad and to give Peter Lakai the chance to represent the All Blacks.”
Additionally, seven players from the All Blacks XV, who are slated to compete in two matches in Ireland next month, will join Robertson’s team for training purposes ahead of the test match against Japan in Yokohama on October 26. These players include Bradley Slater, George Bower, Fabian Holland, Christian Lio-Willie, Oliver Haig, Harry Plummer, and A.J. Lam.
Robertson noted that they will evaluate the conditions of Blackadder, Jacobson, and Papali’i’s injuries before their travel to England to decide if further injury cover will be necessary.
The All Blacks are set to face England on November 3, Ireland on November 9, France on November 17, and Italy on November 24.
