Haason Reddick has been authorized to pursue a trade, as confirmed by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson during the NFL’s fall meetings held in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Reddick, who has yet to compete this season due to a contract dispute with the Jets, was brought on board from Philadelphia in late March to enhance the team’s pass rushing abilities. However, since the completion of his trade and passing a physical exam on April 1, the prominent edge rusher has not been present with the Jets.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who along with Ryan Matha recently took over Reddick’s representation, expressed optimism on Monday about swiftly resolving the ongoing issues. Rosenhaus was seen attending New York’s 23-20 defeat against Buffalo on Monday night, apparently to confer with Jets officials.
“His desire is to remain a New York Jet for many years,” Rosenhaus stated shortly before kickoff, adding, “We aim to see that become a reality.”
However, it seems Reddick is eager to explore opportunities elsewhere. When inquired about the trade permission, Johnson confirmed the request with a simple response: “Yes.”
Following the dismissal of coach Robert Saleh in a conference call the previous Tuesday, Johnson made a direct appeal to Reddick, encouraging him to join the team.
The 30-year-old initially requested a trade on August 12, but general manager Joe Douglas swiftly rejected that plea, asserting that the Jets would not consider trading him. Nevertheless, indications suggest that a trade might be imminent.
Additionally, this development comes after the Jets reportedly reached an agreement on Tuesday to acquire wide receiver Davante Adams from Las Vegas, effectively reuniting him with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Reddick was placed on the reserve/did not report list on July 25, marking the second day of the team’s training camp practice.
As a result of his absence from mandatory workouts and training camp, Reddick has incurred approximately $5 million in fines and will lose nearly an additional $5 million for missing game checks.
The Jets might look at options from teams in need of pass-rushing support, potentially targeting the Detroit Lions, who are now without their star player Aidan Hutchinson, who suffered a season-ending injury with a broken tibia and fibula.
Originally, Reddick was set to earn a nonguaranteed base salary of $14.25 million in the final year of his contract, but he was seeking a long-term extension from Philadelphia. When the Eagles opted not to extend his contract, Reddick requested a trade, leading to his acquisition by New York.
