Officials categorize California college shooting that critically injured employee as ‘workplace violence’

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Santa Monica College in Southern California has shut down its operations for Tuesday as law enforcement investigates a shooting that left an employee injured, which authorities describe as an incident of workplace violence. So far, there have been no arrests related to the case.

According to reports, the gunfire erupted around 10 p.m. on Monday at the Center for Media and Design, located on one of the college’s satellite campuses, which also hosts public radio station KCRW. The college released a statement confirming the event.

The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed, but it was reported that they are in critical condition after being hospitalized. As the investigation continues, the shooter has not yet been apprehended.

In their statement, officials clarified that this incident was related to workplace violence, emphasizing it was not an arbitrary act of aggression. “The College is fully cooperating with authorities, and all Santa Monica College campuses will be closed on Tuesday to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community,” the announcement stated.

The Santa Monica Police Department is currently managing the investigation but has not yet provided further details in response to inquiries. The college, which has multiple satellite campuses along the picturesque coastline, serves an approximate student body of 30,000.
