LONDON — Jonas Eidevall, the head coach of Arsenal Women, has stepped down from his position just weeks into the season. The decision comes after a disappointing start, with the team managing only one win in their first four encounters in the Women’s Super League. This lackluster performance was further compounded by a heavy defeat in their inaugural Champions League match against Bayern Munich, where they lost 5-2.

Eidevall took the helm in June 2021, arriving from FC Rosengard in Sweden. Under his leadership, the team celebrated significant successes, including two League Cup victories and a remarkable run to the semifinals of the Champions League during the 2022-2023 season. This achievement marked Arsenal’s first appearance in that stage of Europe’s premier club tournament in a decade.

The last match he oversaw ended in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at home in the Super League on Saturday. Following this loss, Arsenal officially confirmed that Eidevall had resigned effective immediately.

Edu Gaspar, Arsenal’s sporting director, reflected on Eidevall’s tenure, expressing gratitude for his dedication and impact on the development of the women’s team. “We have deep respect for the commitment he demonstrated to our women’s first team,” Gaspar stated, acknowledging the crucial role Eidevall played in the team’s progress.

In the interim, assistant coach Renée Slegers will lead the team, starting with their upcoming match against Vålerenga in the Champions League on Wednesday.
