SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah’s quarterback Cam Rising will be sidelined indefinitely due to a lower leg injury, as announced by Coach Kyle Whittingham on Monday. Freshman Isaac Wilson is set to take over the starting position for the Utes until further notice.
Rising sustained his injury during the recent game against Arizona State, which ended in a 27-19 defeat for Utah. His leg was bent at an unusual angle due to a hit during the team’s first drive. Although the veteran quarterback continued to play, he displayed compromised mobility and accuracy, completing only 43% of his passes and being intercepted three times.
This isn’t the first time Rising has had to deal with injuries this season; he has already missed three games earlier due to issues with his throwing hand. Additionally, he had to sit out the entire 2023 season after suffering a significant knee injury during the Rose Bowl earlier this year.
Isaac Wilson, who is the brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, stepped in during Rising’s previous absences. In his role as a starter, Wilson achieved a 2-1 record, amassing 726 passing yards along with five touchdowns and five interceptions.
“We believe that the quarterback position remains stable. We just miss having Cam out there,” Coach Whittingham stated.
At this point, there is no specific timeline regarding Rising’s potential return from this most recent injury. Whittingham mentioned that if Rising opts to pursue a medical waiver, he could consider playing an eighth season following this one.
