Bath & Body Works has issued an apology after facing backlash for a candle that featured packaging resembling Ku Klux Klan hoods.
The candle, named “Snowed In,” was available for a short time on the company’s website before it was taken down following complaints.
The design was intended to showcase a snowflake cut from paper, characterized by white, conical edges and two holes positioned centrally.
However, many on social media expressed their disbelief that the design could be interpreted as a snowflake.
One Instagram user remarked, “I have never seen a snowflake that looks like that,” while another questioned the design saying, “This wasn’t an accident.”
Conversely, some individuals defended the design. One user commented, “It’s just a poorly executed design—that shouldn’t have been approved.” Another noted, “This is a paper snowflake. I would not have looked at that and thought it was a racist candle.”
In response to the uproar, a spokesperson for Bath & Body Works stated on Monday that the situation was a mistake and emphasized their commitment to rectifying the matter.
The spokesperson expressed regret for any offense caused and assured that the item would be removed swiftly, while the company reviews its design approval processes for the future.
