A man from Nevada was apprehended at a security checkpoint near a rally for former President Donald Trump in Coachella, California, on Saturday night. According to reports from authorities, the 49-year-old man, who hails from Las Vegas, was found with a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and additional ammunition in his vehicle.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that he was driving a black SUV when deputies, stationed at the rally site, stopped him for inspection. The man faces charges related to the possession of a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine.
Despite the serious nature of the situation, the Sheriff’s statement assured that the incident did not compromise the safety of the former president or the attendees at the event.
To ensure attendee safety, various intersections were monitored by both state and local law enforcement, filtering media members and VIP ticket holders before they reached a designated large grassy area. At this location, drivers were required to open their car hoods and trunks while K-9 officers conducted thorough searches of each vehicle. Meanwhile, general ticket holders were rerouted to a different location approximately three miles from the rally, where they were transported to the event via buses.
The Trump campaign has yet to provide any comment regarding the arrest. In response to the incident, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has scheduled a news conference for the afternoon to provide further details.
