EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants have officially ruled out punter Jamie Gillan for their upcoming Sunday night matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. To fill his spot on the roster, the team has signed experienced punter Matt Haack. Additionally, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux has been placed on injured reserve following wrist surgery, which he underwent on Wednesday after sustaining an injury during last weekend’s game against Seattle. This medical procedure will sideline Thibodeaux for at least four games. The talented 23-year-old had been contributing significantly, with two sacks, three tackles for loss, and seven quarterback hits over the first five games of the season.
Gillan sustained his injury during Friday’s practice, leading to his exclusion for this weekend’s game. Consequently, the Giants, currently standing at 2-3, needed to secure a punter quickly, prompting the signing of Haack, who will now step in for the team on Sunday against the Bengals, who are struggling at 1-4.
In anticipation of the game, the Giants have also elevated wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins and running back Dante Miller from the practice squad to enhance their offensive options for the contest.
On Saturday, the team made adjustments to their injury report, downgrading running back Devin Singletary due to a groin issue, as well as wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who is dealing with a shoulder injury. Both players were previously labeled as questionable on Friday.
Matt Haack joins the Giants after a robust career, having started his professional journey with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent his first four seasons with the Dolphins and then moved to the Buffalo Bills in 2021, where he worked alongside the current Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. In 2022, Haack played all 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts and had a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns earlier this season.
Throughout his career, Haack has participated in 99 games, delivering 432 punts with an impressive average of 44.5 yards per kick, and managing to place 160 of those within the 20-yard line of opponents.
