CONCORD, N.C. — Shane Van Gisbergen achieved a remarkable feat on Saturday by securing the pole position for both the Xfinity Series and the Cup Series races.
The New Zealand driver is vying for the Xfinity Series championship, while he is set to participate in his 10th Cup Series race of the season this coming Sunday at the unique hybrid road course and oval layout of Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Although Van Gisbergen is not among the 12 competitors aiming to progress in the Cup Series championship, he managed to outperform all playoff contenders, driving a Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing to clinch the top starting position for the crucial Sunday event.
Tyler Reddick, who secured the regular season championship and is still in contention for the title, qualified in second place driving a Toyota for 23XI Racing. AJ Allmendinger, the defending champion of The Roval Cup race and undefeated in his four appearances at the track in the Xfinity Series, took the third spot for Kaulig.
Allmendinger is also not in the mix for the Cup Series title but is competing in the playoffs for the Xfinity Series, with that race scheduled later in the evening.
Joey Logano, who finds himself below the cut line for elimination as he heads into Sunday’s race, secured fourth place in a Ford for Team Penske. The playoff field will see four drivers eliminated on that day, placing Logano, his teammate Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez, and Chase Briscoe in a precarious position.
Cindric qualified fifth in a Ford, followed by Hendrick Motorsports colleagues Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, who drove Chevrolets, then Brad Keselowski in an RFK Ford, and Bubba Wallace in a Toyota for 23XI. Notably, Keselowski was dropped from playoff contention in the first round, and Wallace is not competing this year.
William Byron, who has already secured his spot in the next round of playoffs, qualified 10th for Hendrick Motorsports. Christopher Bell, racing a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, will start in 12th and automatically qualify himself for the next playoff round once he begins the race.
Suarez placed 13th in a Chevrolet, while reigning Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney took 14th in a Ford. Alex Bowman qualified 17th in a Chevrolet, and Denny Hamlin rounded out the field in 18th with a Toyota.
Chase Briscoe’s qualifying in 25th made him the lowest-placed driver among those in playoff contention.
