A suspect linked to the tragic shooting incident that resulted in the death of a student at a Tucson college has been apprehended by authorities, according to a statement released on Thursday. University police confirmed the arrest of 20-year-old Ryan Romero-Encinas at a Tucson apartment complex without any resistance.
Reports indicate that Romero-Encinas is set to face a first-degree murder charge in connection with the killing of 19-year-old Minhaj Jamshidi. Court records related to the case were not immediately accessible before Romero-Encinas’ initial court hearing held on Thursday, during which a bond was expected to be determined. The investigation has yet to reveal whether the suspect is enrolled as a student at the University of Arizona.
The tragic event took place late Sunday night at the university’s volleyball courts near the Arizona-Sonoran dormitory, following a confrontation between Jamshidi and the assailant, as reported by the university police. Upon arriving at the scene, officers were provided with a description of the shooter by witnesses. Jamshidi succumbed to his injuries on-site.
Jamshidi, who was pursuing studies in building and construction technology at Pima Community College at the time of his demise, had immigrated to Tucson from Afghanistan with his family in 2021. To shed further light on the incident, university police have announced a press conference scheduled for Thursday to disclose more details surrounding the shooting.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Jamshidi as authorities work towards bringing justice in the aftermath of this distressing event.
