Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer revealed on social media that he has been diagnosed with dementia at the age of 69. Kramer, who spent the majority of his NFL career with the Vikings and achieved a Pro Bowl selection in 1986 after leading the league in passer rating, received the diagnosis over a year ago during a health and wellness program for former NFL players at the Cleveland Clinic.
He decided to make his diagnosis public following Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre’s announcement that he has Parkinson’s disease during a congressional hearing. Kramer disclosed that his doctors informed him that his dementia has not progressed and mentioned that he has ceased consuming alcohol to better manage the condition.
In his social media post, Kramer conveyed that he does not seek sympathy, emphasizing that he has had a fulfilling life and would not change a thing. Known as “Two Minute Tommy” for his ability to excel in late-game situations, one of Kramer’s most memorable plays was a 46-yard Hail Mary pass in 1980 that led to a touchdown caught one-handed by Ahmad Rashad, securing a crucial victory over Cleveland and clinching a division title for the Vikings. Kramer showcased his talent by throwing for 456 yards and four touchdowns in that game.
Native of San Antonio, Texas, Kramer was drafted in the first round by the Vikings in 1977 from Rice University. Despite being plagued by injuries throughout his career, he etched his name in Vikings history as the second-leading passer in yards, trailing only Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton. Kramer’s tenure with the Vikings was marked by resilience, including his sole complete 16-game season as a starter in 1979, amidst various setbacks.
Kramer concluded his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints in 1990. His journey as a professional football player was shaped by both triumphs and challenges, embodying a spirit of perseverance that he now carries into his battle against dementia.
