On Wednesday night, the Toronto Blue Jays secured a 6-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox, effectively eliminating Boston from postseason contention. This win was attributed to Jonatan Clase hitting his first career home run and Kevin Gausman pitching effectively for six innings in his final start of the season.
The Red Sox, who had been on a four-game winning streak, needed to win their remaining four games and rely on assistance from other teams in the American League wild-card race to continue their postseason hopes.
Clase had an outstanding performance by going 3 for 3, drawing a walk, scoring twice, and bringing in two runs. He further solidified Toronto’s lead by hitting a home run against Josh Winckowski in the seventh inning.
Alejandro Kirk, with a hitting streak of 17 games, contributed to the Blue Jays’ victory with three hits and three RBIs, preventing a three-game sweep and ending a losing streak of six games. This win was the Blue Jays’ first against Boston in Toronto for the season, with the Red Sox previously having a 5-0 record on Toronto’s home ground.
Toronto finished the season with a record of 21-31 against AL East opponents for the second consecutive year.
Gausman, recording a 14-11 season, allowed only one run and four hits in his final game, walking three and striking out three batters. He concluded his performance by retiring Nick Sogard on a fly ball with the bases loaded.
The Red Sox’s Richard Fitts, previously unbeaten in his major league career for 15 2/3 innings, saw his streak end at 18 2/3 innings when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kirk hit consecutive doubles in the fourth inning.
Fitts was charged with four runs and six hits across five innings, during which he also walked two and struck out two batters.
Kirk later made significant contributions with a two-out single off the right-field wall in the fifth inning, driving in two runs. However, Wilyer Abreu foiled Kirk’s attempt to advance to second base by throwing him out.
Boston concluded their road schedule with a 43-38 record.
In roster moves, Toronto recalled RHP Brett de Geus from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned RHP Tommy Nance to the spring training facility.
On the injury front, Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was scheduled for surgery on his fractured right middle finger on Wednesday.
Boston will head home to close out the season with a three-game series against Tampa Bay, while Toronto will finish the season by hosting a three-game series against Miami.
