The San Francisco 49ers have encountered defensive flaws in the last couple of weeks that rarely trouble what is generally considered one of the NFL’s top defensive units. Correcting these issues is now an even more significant challenge as defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a partial triceps tear sustained during the recent loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
In their recent defeats against Minnesota and the Rams, the 49ers have struggled to consistently pressure the quarterback, contain the running game, and prevent big plays downfield. This has led to a concerning statistic of allowing 6.11 yards per play, ranking third-worst in the league this season and fourth-worst in franchise history through three games.
Star linebacker Fred Warner acknowledges the team’s subpar performance, emphasizing the need to address the negatives while also recognizing positive aspects on film. Without Hargrave, who signed a substantial contract in 2023, the 49ers will rely on newcomers like Maliek Collins and Jordan Elliott at defensive tackle, alongside depth player Kevin Givens and potential promotions from the practice squad.
The team traditionally builds its defense from the front line, aiming to dominate the trenches. However, the defensive line has not lived up to expectations so far this season, ranking average in sacks and pressure rates compared to previous years. With Hargrave sidelined, San Francisco may have to increase blitzing to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan highlighted the setback of losing Hargrave and the need for other players to step up. Defensive end Nick Bosa echoed sentiments of a collective effort to compensate for Hargrave’s absence and enhance the pass rush. Despite offseason acquisitions like Leonard Floyd, the defense has not met its standard, particularly in run defense.
As the team works to address these defensive challenges, they are also managing injuries to key players like quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle. The 49ers are focused on regaining their dominant form on defense and preparing for upcoming games with a reshuffled lineup.
