West Virginia Wesleyan College unveiled plans to introduce degree programs and training at a campus that was previously owned by a now-defunct university in Philippi, West Virginia. The college is teaming up with Battlers Knob LLC, an events venue business that purchased the former campus of Alderson Broaddus University for $5 million earlier this year.
President James Moore of West Virginia Wesleyan expressed in a statement on the college’s website that they are in the process of seeking accreditation approval for their new venture at the former Alderson Broaddus University site. Moore highlighted the rich history of allied health education at the previous institution as a foundation they plan to leverage for future academic endeavors. He also noted the significance of expanding their presence beyond local boundaries to benefit the statewide community.
Battlers Knob is currently utilizing the Philippi campus for a variety of public and private events, including weddings and business meetings. Craig Phillips, the owner of Battlers Knob, emphasized their commitment to supporting continuous economic, educational, and community development since acquiring the campus. Phillips expressed strong confidence in the partnership with West Virginia Wesleyan College aligning with their overarching mission.
Previously, Alderson Broaddus University, a small Baptist institution established in 1932, faced financial challenges for several years. The university ultimately declared bankruptcy in August 2023, a month after announcing its impending closure. Following the revocation of its degree-granting authority by the state’s higher education oversight board, Alderson Broaddus University left its 625 students in a state of uncertainty, prompting them to seek enrollment opportunities at alternative colleges and universities.
