Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his disappointment at the NFL’s decision to suspend safety Derwin James Jr. for one game. This suspension comes at a challenging time for the Chargers as they prepare to face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, with several key players dealing with injuries in addition to James’ absence. These injuries include quarterback Justin Herbert, offensive tackles Rashaun Slater and Joe Alt, and linebacker Joey Bosa.
The league announced the suspension on Monday night, which James promptly appealed. However, the decision was upheld on Tuesday night by hearing officer Derrick Brooks, who was jointly appointed by the league and the players’ union to preside over the case. James, who has accumulated a league-leading five unnecessary roughness penalties since last season, was fined $91,027 for hits to defenseless receivers prior to this suspension. As per contract data from the NFL Players Association, the one-game suspension will cost him $708,333 in base salary.
Despite the suspension, James has been proactive in seeking guidance from officials and the league on how to adapt his physical playing style to comply with the NFL’s rules. Coach Harbaugh spoke in defense of James, emphasizing his efforts to play within the guidelines while maintaining a physical approach to the game.
The league’s vice president of football operations, Jon Runyan, cited James’ targeting of Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth during a recent game as a reason for the suspension. Runyan highlighted James’ decision to lower his head and make contact with Freiermuth’s helmet, despite having a clear path to avoid such contact.
Harbaugh, however, raised “mitigating circumstances” in response to the play, pointing out that Freiermuth’s actions also contributed to the contact. He commended James for his leadership and sportsmanship on the team, emphasizing that James always aims to tackle opponents as per the NFL’s standards.
In James’ absence, Elijah Molden, who has already started a game this season, is expected to take on his position in the lineup. Coach Harbaugh praised James as a valuable teammate and captain, highlighting his commitment to playing the game safely and in accordance with league regulations.
