New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo announced on Wednesday that the team will be putting linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley on injured reserve due to a torn pectoral muscle. This injury occurred during the game against Seattle on September 15th. It remains uncertain whether Bentley will be able to make a comeback this season.
Replacing Bentley on defense, Raekwon McMillan is set to take on the role. Mayo emphasized the importance of having leadership and representation on the defensive side of the team, acknowledging safety Kyle Dugger’s promotion to captain in Bentley’s absence. Dugger, now entering his fifth season with the Patriots, is known for his physicality and leadership qualities.
During Bentley’s absence, Dugger expressed his intention to lead by example, citing former Patriots safety Devin McCourty as a significant influence on his leadership style. McCourty, a veteran who retired from the team in 2022 after 13 years, served as a mentor to Dugger.
Additionally, offensive lineman Sidy Sow returned to practice on Wednesday with hopes of making his debut in the 2024 season against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Sow’s return to the field adds depth to the team’s offensive line.
The New England Patriots are gearing up for their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers, with key player changes and returns in the lineup expected to impact their performance.
