Virgin Mary statue stolen in Milwaukee area and recovered, returned to church

A statue of the Virgin Mary, standing 5 feet tall and weighing several hundred pounds, has been returned to Divine Mercy Parish in South Milwaukee after being stolen over a year ago. The incident occurred in August 2023, as reported by WISN-TV. The theft left church members puzzled about the statue’s disappearance until recent events unfolded.

Law enforcement authorities discovered the stolen statue in a storage locker in Milwaukee following an anonymous tip received last month. An 18-year-old individual confessed to taking the statue and directed the officers to its location. As of now, no charges have been pressed in connection to the theft.

When asked about the missing statue, church Director of Worship, Amanda Decker, expressed her relief at its recovery, stating that “Nobody knew what happened to her.” In the absence of the original statue, a new Virgin Mary statue, donated by a generous benefactor, has been securely fastened outside the church. The original statue is in need of some repairs, and the church plans to place it inside the building once the necessary restoration work is completed.

The return of the beloved Virgin Mary statue has brought a sense of closure to Divine Mercy Parish community, who can now look forward to restoring the stolen statue to its rightful place of reverence within the church.
