Approximately 60 Lazio fans encountered issues with German authorities as they attempted to avoid being accompanied by a police escort before a Europa League match against Dynamo Kyiv. The fans were discovered to be in possession of knives, clubs, and other weapons, as stated by police officials on Wednesday. The individuals were subjected to inspection late on Tuesday and were detained until the following day.

According to a statement issued by Lazio, the supporters who were held overnight were forbidden from attending the game on Wednesday. Although no arrests were made, the incident highlights the ongoing challenges with fan behavior surrounding Lazio matches. Dynamo Kyiv has been hosting its home games in Hamburg due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Lazio fans have a well-documented history of causing disturbances, leading to various penalties imposed on the club within Serie A and European competitions. This troublesome reputation was further accentuated prior to a Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich in March. During that time, an Italian individual from a group of around 100 Lazio fans was apprehended for engaging in fascist chants in a beer hall associated with Adolf Hitler’s political beginnings.

In a separate incident a year prior, a supporter wearing a shirt referencing Hitler was permanently banned from attending Lazio matches by the club. The fan sported a Lazio jersey with the name “Hitlerson” and the number 88, symbolizing “Heil Hitler,” prompting the club to take swift disciplinary action. Moreover, Lazio faced repercussions during the 2022-23 season, being required to play a Serie A match with a section of the Olimpico stadium inaccessible to spectators following instances of racist behavior from fans towards opposing players.

The recurring challenges with fan conduct underscore the importance of robust security measures and disciplinary actions to ensure the safety and integrity of football matches.
