Roland Dempster had an impressive game, rushing for 179 yards and scoring two touchdowns to lead Stony Brook to a 24-17 victory over Campbell in the Coastal Athletic Association opener on Saturday.
Stony Brook took a commanding 21-0 lead in the second quarter, but Campbell managed to rally back with two touchdowns. It wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter that the Seawolves were able to secure a two-score lead again. With a 21-14 advantage, Stony Brook orchestrated a crucial 10-play, 53-yard drive that ended in a 39-yard field goal by Enda Kirby, extending their lead to 24-14.
Campbell struggled to advance past midfield after a third-quarter touchdown drive, which came from a 37-yard pass from Chad Mascoe Jr. to Aiden Valdez, bringing the score to 21-14. In the final minutes of the game, Campbell attempted a field goal from the 12-yard line to narrow the gap to seven points, but Stony Brook successfully recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to secure the win.
Dempster made a significant impact early in the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter, giving Stony Brook a 14-0 lead. Malachi Marshall completed 13 of 30 passes for 157 yards for Stony Brook, while Mascoe went 9 of 14 for 160 yards with one touchdown for Campbell.
Stony Brook improved to 3-1 with the victory, while Campbell dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
