Two individuals sustained injuries on Thursday following a fire at a chemical plant in Geismar, Louisiana, according to officials. The incident occurred at the Chevron Renewable Energy Group facility in Geismar, which is located approximately 66 miles west of New Orleans, around 8:30 a.m. The Chevron spokesperson, Allison Cook, mentioned that the fire has been contained with the assistance of local resources, and the team is working on safely shutting down the plant. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the fire was completely extinguished by 9:40 a.m., and there were no reported off-site impacts. Although roads near the plant were briefly closed, they have since been reopened. A representative from the Baton Rouge General Medical Center stated that one of the injured workers suffered burns covering 15% of their body and is in serious condition. The other worker sustained burns on 2% of their body and is in good condition, set to be discharged for further treatment with outpatient care by the end of Thursday, as per Meghan Parrish, the vice president of communications at the medical center.
Plant operations were ceased for the day, with workers being moved off-site as a precautionary measure.
