Victor Hedman chosen as new captain of Tampa Bay Lightning, taking over from Steven Stamkos

The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced Victor Hedman as their new team captain, taking over the role from Steven Stamkos, who recently left the team to join the Nashville Predators. Hedman, who has been with the Lightning for 15 seasons, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating that leading the team is a great honor and privilege. The 33-year-old defenseman from Sweden acknowledged the responsibility that comes with wearing the captain’s “C” but assured that he would approach the role with the same dedication and commitment.

General manager Julien BriseBois praised Hedman as a cornerstone player who is highly respected by his teammates, coaches, and peers in the NHL. He highlighted Hedman’s 15 years of service to the organization, both on and off the ice, as exemplary of what it means to be a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. BriseBois expressed confidence in Hedman’s ability to excel in his new leadership role as the team continues its pursuit of winning the Stanley Cup.

Hedman played a significant role in the Lightning’s back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, earning playoff MVP honors in the first championship run. He has also been recognized as the NHL’s top defenseman, winning the Norris Trophy in 2018 and being a top-three finalist in multiple other seasons. Joining Hedman in leadership roles are alternate captains Ryan McDonagh, who was reacquired in a trade with the Predators, and Nikita Kucherov, a finalist for the MVP award in the past season.

The Lightning’s selection of Hedman as captain marks a new chapter for the team as they transition into the post-Stamkos era, with a renewed focus on achieving success in the upcoming season.
